Recent data from Lands of America records $592 million in land and rural property for sale in the Inland Empire. This represents a total of 78,537 acres of land for sale in the state. The most expensive piece of land listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $13 million, while the median price for land, ranches and farms in Illinois came in at $409,634. The average price of land for sale in Illinois was $552,940. There was 4,521 acres of sold land in Illinois recorded in March 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from the previous period. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $24.3 million. Some 42 percent of the appropriately named Great Lakes State is covered by water, spelling abundant fishing opportunities on its diverse spread of lakes, rivers and streams. Hunting in the state is similarly diverse, with popular game species including waterfowl, deer, wild turkey and raccoon and even skunk. In terms of its size, Illinois is the country's 25th-largest state, covering an area of 57,918 square miles (37 million acres). Of its total landmass, 55,519 square miles (96 percent) is made up of land, while the remaining 2,395 square miles is covered by water. Less than ten percent of land in Illinois is public land (i.e. national and state parks, national forests, BLM land). As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Illinois. Of the 102 counties in Illinois, McHenry County had the most land and rural real estate for sale.
